For most of my childhood, our tree was decorated with ornaments I had made in school and ornaments that my mom and I had collected in various places. The colorful assortment became a tradition, until one year, when we decided to change the pattern altogether and go with non-traditional golds and silvers.

By changing the theme, we learned that some of the most basic Christmas tree decorations make the loudest statements. Simply changing the colored lights to white lights made the tree look more elegant. Instead of homemade popcorn and chain garland, we stung silver and gold beads and the look changed dramatically.
